Shadowing
variable, usually between 8am and 4pm
Students decide their daily shadowing hours in concert with their physician mentors, and these hours can vary on a day-to-day basis. At minimum, most students should expect to shadow from roughly 7am to 5pm each day; many students, especially those assigned to surgical specialists, will shadow at much less consistent times. Students might (and should!) have a few minutes in the middle of the day for lunch, subsidized by BIOME at roughly $10 per day.
Evening Programming
variable, usually 5:30 to 9:30pm
After returning to campus, all students are encouraged to participate in our nightly debriefs over HUDS dinner until the start of mandatory evening programming at 7pm. Programming ends by 9:30pm each night, after which students are encouraged to privately reflect on their day of shadowing, organize any thoughts and questions to discuss with their mentors to next day, and enjoy some much-needed rest.
Outings
first day of shadowing
Most years, our program's dates have included Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, so many (though not all) students only shadow Tuesday through Friday of the week of the program. As a result, we offer day-long social programming for students to participate in on Monday of the BIOME session. Last year's outing was to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and included lunch on site.
